Yearbook on Plant Variety Rights 2011




                                                              Preface of the Editor





                   A total of 199 applications for plant variety rights were received in 2011. Among them 32
              applications are pending for document review and 167applications are undergoing substantial

              review. A total of 76 applications for plant variety right registration were approved and an-
              nounced during the current year, among which ornamental plants accounted for 84%, fruit trees

              9%, and vegetable plants 7%. The average periods from application to approval notice are flo-

              wers crops 20 months, when the applications are undergoing substantive review.



                   In order to expand the applicable scope for plant variety rights, 16 applicable plants were
              announced during the current year, including Bamboo (100/3/18), Sukura (100/1/18), Azalea

              (100/1/18), Camellia (100/3/18), Coleus (100/7/28), Garden Orchid (100/8/30), Crown of

              Thorns (100/11/7), Stok (100/12/1), White sapote (100/7/19), Abiu (100/7/19), Longan
              (100/7/19), Pomelo (100/7/19), Grapefruit (100/7/19), Lemon (100/7/19), Lime (100/7/19) and

              Kumquat (100/7/19).



                   Promotion of intellectual property rights has been a major administrative policy in Ta-

              iwan, the Yearbook on Plant Variety Rights not only provides complete data regarding variety

              right registration of the current year, but also demonstrates our efforts to protect plant variety
              rights and records the achievements during the process of research and development of new

              plant varieties in Taiwan. From this year onward, the English translation of the yearbook will
              be available below the Chinese text, in order to disseminate information regarding the plant

              variety rights in Taiwan all over the world.



                   Many thanks to the applicants and plant breeders for providing materials and pictures of

              the new plant varieties during the data collection process, by doing so that the compilation and
              edition of the yearbook could be successfully completed. Despite our best efforts to maintain

              the completeness and accuracy of information, mistakes may be made in haste. Hence, your

              kind comments and suggestions would be appreciated.
