Taiwan exports jujubes to Malaysia, breaking through the pandemic barrier

Release date:2021-01-21
For consumers domestic and abroad, Taiwanese jujubes have been a top gifting choice for holiday seasons and visits to friends and family. Agriculture and Food Agency, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (AFA) guided farmers to graft new varieties onto existing crops to spread out the harvest and adopt net-house cultivation for quality improvement. Farmers also engaged in contractual production with exporters to market their carefully nurtured and selected LV-grade jujubes to Malaysia. This breakthrough in the overseas market is especially impressive facing the adversity of COVID-19.

Mediating suppliers and exporters to enable synchronized delivery to foreign markets

Taiwanese jujubes have enormous fruits that are bright and juicy and peel that is paper-thin. Their texture is delicate to taste but crispy and joyful to bite. The AFA brings farmers’ groups and exporters together to embark on contractual production and marketing. Through the introduction of cold-chain and post-harvest technologies and the three-phase quality management system, the produced fruits are now up to the safety and sanitation standards of overseas markets. The export volume has grown considerably over the last few years, from 280 MTs in 2017 to 845 MTs in 2020, to destinations including Mainland China, Hong Kong, Canada, Singapore, Japan, and Malaysia. Among them, the export to the Southeast Asian market has the most potential, which has thus been targeted by exporters for further development. Under the guidance of the AFA, premium LV-grade jujubes by Pingtung County Pao Tao Nan Fang Fruits & Vegetables Production Cooperative have been exported to Malaysia through Mitagri Co., Ltd. The export coincides with the surging demand for jujubes during the Chinese holiday season. The AFA further elaborates that with fresh fruit markets hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, the exporter adopted a pre-order model, which not only delivered great sales results but also paved the way for future export of Taiwanese fresh fruits in the region.

Freshly harvested jujubes hit the market with superb quality and taste

The AFA indicates that although we have entered the prime season of Taiwanese jujubes, thanks to the newly adopted cultivation management and variety diversification for production season extension, the supply can now last until April. Aside from export promotion, the AFA also roll out measures like group-buying within enterprises to tackle the domestic market. Taiwanese jujubes contain a wide range of micronutrients including Vitamin B1, B2, niacin, Vitamin C, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus as well as dietary fiber. Consumers are welcome to take advantage of the harvest by choosing jujubes for the holiday. Doing so not only gets you quality jujubes that are nutritious and flavorful but also helps reward dedicated jujube farmers with cheerful pocket money.
