The first private collection auction (PCA) of Taiwanese specialty coffee results in record-breaking prices

Release date:2021-09-01
To improve the international visibility, expand overseas markets for prime Taiwanese coffee and to find a new way of coffee marketing in response to the change of consumption patterns during the pandemic, the Agriculture and Food Agency, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (AFA) brings Taiwan Coffee Association, Taiwan Coffee Laboratory, and an international governing body Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) together to host the first-ever Taiwan Private Collection Auction. Under the careful evaluation of 44 professional jurists, 9 coffees of Taiwanese origin entered the final round and attracted the biddings of 50 organizations from 14 countries including the US, Saudi Arabia, Japan, France, Canada, China, and Taiwan. The auction prizes ranged from NTD 4,000 to 8,000 per kilogram, with the average being NTD 5,760 per kilogram (USD 94.5/lb). The highlight of the event is the coffee from Zhuo Wu Mountain Coffee Farm, which was sold at a whopping NTD 30,820/kilogram, breaking the historical record of PCA and amazing the entire panel of buyers.

Making sparks on the world coffee map for Taiwanese coffee

The AFA points out that Taiwan has over a century of history in coffee cultivation. In recent years, the AFA has guided local governments to hold regional and national evaluation contests. Courses on cultivation management, coffee baking, and coffee cupping have also been held. Years of effort have resulted in a significant increase in coffee quality and won many high scores in evaluations by Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), and consumers all over the world started to take note of specialty coffees from Taiwan, as they became eager to know more about this newly emerged contender on the coffee landscape and its unique coffee offerings.

The AFA further indicates that impacted by the pandemic, international buyers are barred from entering Taiwan to purchase its coffee beans, and domestic producers are unable to travel abroad to make promotions. That is why the AFA reached out to ACE to co-host the Taiwan Specialty Coffee Competition and introduce an auction system. It provided a gateway through which excellent coffee farmers and estates can showcase their coffee products. By connecting Taiwan’s coffee regions with international coffee auction platforms, farmers’ hard-earned crops can obtain higher values and let the world see Taiwan.

International jurists amazed by Taiwan coffee finalists

The AFA explains that this competition enrolled 34 coffees and invited 18 senior domestic jurists to select 19 representing coffees and deliver them to 12 global coffee centers for the final selection. Upon cupping, 9 coffee lots received a grade over 86 to be admitted to the auction. The competition director was especially impressed with the quality of participating Taiwanese specialty coffees, highlighting that the nine finalists from regions like Chiayi and Yunlin all feature rich and intense aromas that are unique to Taiwan’s island weather. No coffee lovers should overlook such exquisite coffee (finalists and their auction prices detailed in the attachment).

The AFA emphasizes that Taiwan’s specialty coffees got the world’s attention right on its first stage appearance, allowing foreign buyers to gain more understanding of and love for Taiwanese coffee. Meanwhile, more consumers will get a chance to taste quality domestic coffees. A major exhibition will be held during November 19-22, 2021, to allow the aforementioned coffee farms display their excellent products to domestic coffee lovers.
