First ever in Taiwan! Innovative atemoya-based processed products hit the market

Release date:2022-01-18
Domestically grown atemoyas have been known for their excellent flavors. With the fruit in season, the Agriculture and Food Agency, Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan (AFA) collaborates with National Chung Hsin University to convene scholars and experts into a technical service group, who embark on a mission to help farmers and food processors developing new atemoya-based products. By processing challenges such us browning and bitterness, hand-shaken smoothies, dried crackers, atemoya matcha, beer-flavor soda, specialty pastries, shaved ice, and many other atemoya-based products have been developed. From January 18, 2022, a diverse line of products become available at vendors including TEA TOP, Yuan Ming Food, Ching Tse Food, HSIN TUNG YANG, and Eslite Food, so the cosumers can have the right choice for this gifting season.

Academia joining force with research institutes to jump-start atemoya processing
The AFA explains that as a premium fruit, atemoyas were mostly purchased for holiday gifting and fresh consumption, and processing was rarely attempted. In line with Taiwan’s handmade drink culture where new flavors are constantly demanded, the drink chain “TEA TOP” developed the first-ever atemoya-based hand-shaken drink “Good Things Happen with Atemoya and Milk”, which hit the market today and will soon be rolled out to 45 stores nationwide. In support of the government’s initiative to expand demand for the fruit, this move is expected to lead more counterparts to follow suit. At the same day, pineapple cakes infused with atemoya ingredients by Yuan Ming Food and pineapple atemoya pastries by Ching Tse Food are also launched.

Diverse processed products to provide a multitude of atemoya enjoyments to consumers
The AFA further explains that in response to the temporary Chinese suspension of the import of Taiwanese atemoyas, the AFA sought a range of measures to stabilize supply and demand. Aside from already frozen atemoyas for export, fresh atemoya cuts at nationwide Family Marts, the AFA collaborated with National Chung Hsing University to produce more varieties of processed atemoya products. These includes beer-flavor soda, an atemoya matcha beverage, and sugared dried atemoyas. These products will become available right before the Chinese New Year at HSIN TUNG YANG and Eslite Food stores so people can enjoy a sweet and flavorful new year.
The AFA advocates that as we enter the prime season of atemoya, the fruit has become excellent in quality and abundant in supply. With rich dietary fibers, vitamins, and diverse nutrients, it is also suitable to be processed into handmade drinks, bakery pastries, among other processed products. That way, people can easily enjoy tasty and nutritious atemoyas at any time and play a role in stabilizing supply and demand. Therefore, we call on consumers to take action to support Taiwanese farmers.
