The obstacle only made Taiwan’s orchid industry stronger
The AFA explains that with COVID-19 breaking out in 2020, the world as a whole is demanding less non-daily necessities. On top of that, port congestions and flight cancellations hurt all flower exporting countries badly. In an effort to maintain its market shares in the US and Japan, Taiwan put forth measures like export rewards and charter cargos to stabilize the flower export operation. As the pandemic subsides and demand for flowers picks up, the stabilization effort in 2020 has proven to be a huge success, with orchid export making historical record in 2021. The export revenue reached NTD 5.8 billion, showing an increase of 10.6% compared to the previous year.
As TIOS enters its 16th iteration, plants of snowy white orchid are sprayed with blue nano paints at top and yellow at bottom to represent the Ukrainian national flag. That treatment not only help flowers last longer, it also shows a token of support for Ukrainians from Taiwanese people. Aside from a friendly gesture, it also serves to impress visitors with Taiwan’s competency in agricultural technology.
Digital viewing experience driven by technology
The AFA indicates that to promote Taiwanese orchids globally, the organizer has been innovative with its exhibition design. Considering that the COVID-19 situation has prevented many international buyers from joining the event in person, this year’s event employs 360-degree shooting technology on over 300 commercial orchid plants. Buyers can experience the beauty of the orchids and place order on them thousand miles away. Ordinary citizens are welcome to make it to the site and experience how orchids can be blended with technology. If the situation does not allow, from March 30, an online viewing section will also be available, where exhibition pavilions for the main feature, competitions, and orchid creations are recreated in 3D models for online viewing to allow everyone a chance to participate.
