Taiwan specialty coffees wowed the world and made new mark in auction results
The AFA indicates that with mindful and caring management of coffee farmers, Taiwan’s coffee quality has improved tremendously and received high scores in multiple evaluations by Coffee Quality Institute. To improve the international visibility of Taiwan specialty coffees, expand the export market, and mitigate the impact of the pandemic with new mediating mechanisms, the AFA held the first ever Taiwan PCA in 2021. Last year’s event attracted 34 enrollments; 19 passed the preliminary round and 9 had been elected to be auctioned on the first ever Taiwan Private Collection Auction. One particular lot was auctioned for NTD30,820/kg ($500.50/lb.), the highest ever on any ACE platform, capturing the attention of the entire coffee world.
The AFA explains that the pandemic has prevented international buyers from coming to Taiwan to shop for quality coffee beans; on the other hand, domestic producers cannot travel abroad to promote their coffee beans. To continue the international promotion effort, this year, under AFA’s guidance, Coffee Industrial Alliance of Taiwan collaborated with Taiwan Coffee Association, Taiwan Coffee Development Association, and Taiwan Coffee Laboratory (TCL) to reach Alliance for Coffee Excellence (ACE) to hold Private Collection Auction for the second time (2022 Taiwan PCA).
