AFA and Kasama City sign an MOU to deepen the collaboration on food and culture between Taiwan and Japan

Release date:2019-07-24
To facilitate the exchange on food and culture between Taiwan and Japan, the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) and Kasama City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan sign the “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation for Strengthening the Exchange on Food and Culture” today (July 24, 2019). The AFA explains that, in celebration of the one year anniversary of Representative Taiwan Office of Kasama City, the city’s mayor Shinju Yamaguchi (山口伸樹) led a delegation to conduct an exchange visit to Taiwan between July 23 and July 25, during which today’s signing takes place. The MOU reached covers bilateral purchase of one another’s agricultural products, personnel exchange, and works regarding agricultural promotion. It has been planned that Kasama City, Mito City, and Oarai Machi will make an initial purchase of Taiwanese bananas in November this year (2019) and distribute them to local elementary schools for children’s lunch menus. That move helps introduce Taiwan and its specialties to Japanese school kids. A series of marketing campaigns are also planned at outlets of Kasumi Supermarket, a prominent grocery retailer in the region. Tasting stands and introductory clips on Taiwanese bananas highlighting the springy texture and mellowness reach unaware customer groups and convey Japanese consumers an impression of high quality. “Kasama Chrysanthemum Festival” is also among the occasions for the promotion. These collaborative efforts will help Taiwanese bananas secure more marketing channels.

Targeting Tokyo 2020 to gain awareness among new consumers

The AFA indicates that in order to revive the image of Taiwanese bananas in Japanese consumers, a series of collaborative efforts with Japanese cities, from supplying bananas to elementary schools in Gotemba City, Shizuoka Prefecture since 2016, a contest of desserts made with Taiwanese bananas in Tokyo in 2017, and collective purchase of Taiwanese bananas by Toyama Prefecture, Ishikawa Prefecture, and Shizuoka Prefecture to supply to local elementary schools in 2018. Other efforts have been made to break Taiwanese agri-products into supermarket chains Shizutesu Store and Osakaya Shop. The AFA adds that Kasama City is the one initiating this cooperation by inquiring the AFA about the possibility of a deal like Toyama Prefecture last year, to supply Taiwanese bananas to the city’s school kids. This development confirms that previous initiatives are taking effect and have established a good name for Taiwanese banana. As a city known for its golf clubs, a golf course in Kasama City has been selected as the training area for Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and the city is also designated to receive foreign athletes (Taiwanese players included). That gives an excellent opportunity for Taiwanese agri-products to gain exposure among international players and visitors. The growing popularity of Taiwanese agri-products like bananas in Japanese market will cement the friendship between both countries and set the stage for more international cooperations.
