AFA Organizes the International Forum for Promoting Local Production and Consumption and the Third Certificate Awarding Ceremony for Agri-food Educators

Release date:2023-12-20
On December 15, the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA), Ministry of Agriculture, hosted the International Forum for Promoting Local Production and Consumption and the Third Certificate Awarding Ceremony for Agri-food Educators at the Great Skyview Hotel. Two experts from Japan were invited to speak at the forum: Professor Seiichi Sakurai of Chiba University addressed the history and future of local production and consumption in Japan, while Ms. Miki Kato, Manager at the Japan Co-operative Alliance (JCA), shared the diverse functions and local charm of farmers’ outlets. The event also celebrated the successful completion of training for future agri-food educators. In the presence of multiple experts and scholars of local production and consumption, as well as representatives from farmers’ associations and the business world, AFA Director-General Jong-I Hu presented certificates to those who passed the third edition of the training.

Agri-Food Educators Trained to Share Tips for Buying Fresh and Safe Domestically-Produced Agriculture Products
Since 2013, the AFA has been promoting initiatives for “local production and consumption” and “eating locally and in season,” including supporting farmers’ associations across Taiwan in setting up direct-to-consumer sales points for agriculture products. As the efforts entered their 10th year, more than 130 sales points have been established—in the form of farmers’ outlets, rural community shops, and farmers’ markets—offering diversified sales channels for farmers and accessible places for consumers to purchase locally-produced food. Since 2021, the AFA has expanded its outreach initiatives to include the training of agri-food educators. Playing the crucial role as “storytellers about food,” these educators share knowledge about the distinct features of local farming, the current status of supplying farmers, and anecdotes about local farming and agricultural products to promote the essence and value of "eating locally and in season.” By encouraging direct engagements between farmers and consumers, the idea of “local production and consumption” could spread across Taiwan and become an integral part of people’s everyday lives.

Promotion of Local Production and Consumption to Support Sustainable Agriculture
The Food and Agricultural Education Act, which came into effect on May 4, 2022, has raised awareness among more organizations and members of the public about food and agriculture issues, inspiring people to consider the connections between food consumption, environmental resources, and agricultural production. Furthermore, local production and consumption, as part of sustainable agriculture, are among the six major principles for promoting agri-food education under the Act. The AFA looks forward to working with everyone to promote the ideals of environmental friendliness, a low-carbon diet, treasuring food and other resources, and fostering a love for food. This will enable farmers' outlets to fulfill their role as connectors within local communities and serve as bases for agri-food education. The AFA also aims to facilitate support and collaborations between more consumers, businesses, and organizations to promote the sustainable development of Taiwan’s agriculture.
