Development of Organic Agriculture and Eco-friendly farming

Release date:2017-07-29
As one of the most environmentally-friendly farming methods, organic agriculture not only supplies safe and high-quality agricultural products to market but also reduces the pollution impact of agricultural production on the environment. The AFA has implemented policy measures including counseling farmers in organic certification, establishing technical services group, and promoting organic cultivation clusters in the light of boosting the scale of organic production.
On top of that, to advance the growing techniques of the participants, various education and training courses on cultivation management were organized; to expand distribution channels, the CAS organic mark were introduced. Throughout the process, all walks of life from volunteers, businesses, religious groups, to other parties have dedicated to nation’s organic agriculture development.

To expand the positive effect on the environment from agricultural activities, the MOA has included the Eco Friendly Farming, a cultivating method of using no chemical substances, GMOs, and other relevant materials into its guidance scheme. Taking cues from the idea of green payment, the first subsidy on such farming activities took place in 2017, and the payment was issued on the basis of land area cultivated, so that farmers can be rewarded for the benefit they brought to the ecology and be compensated for the diminished profits. The environmental friendliness aspect makes this way of supporting farming transformation an ideal use of public resource.
In 2017, the Council of Agriculture (now the Ministry of Agriculture) launched the "New Agriculture Innovation Promotion Program." Since the implementation of the "Organic Agriculture Promotion Act" on May 30, 2019, the government has actively promoted organic and eco-friendly agriculture as solutions to climate change and net-zero carbon emission.

The area of organic and friendly farming has grown from 6,783 hectares in 2016 to about 3.6 times that size. By 2023, there are 18 organic certification bodies in Taiwan, with 17,365 hectares of certified organic land. Additionally, 47 eco-friendly farming promotion organizations have been approved, covering 6,749 hectares recognized, bring the total to 24,114 hectares of organic and eco-friendly farming land. This accounts for 3.06% of the arable land in Taiwan.
